Origin

Yerba mate is a plant grown in Argentina, the world's leading producer, but it is also cultivated in Paraguay and southern Brazil, where the soil, temperature and humidity offer ideal conditions. South America is the only place in the world where yerba mate is grown. In addition to being the world's leading consumer, Argentina is also the largest producer and exporter of yerba mate, accounting for 60% of the world market. The yerba mate produced in Argentina won the certificate of denomination of origin. This certificate not only provides a legal framework, but also represents the fundamental link between quality and the geographical location where it is produced. Mate is an infusion made from yerba mate that is very popular in some South American countries, such as Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil. The consumption of mate dates back to the Guarani natives, the aborigines who inhabited certain regions of South America. The Guarani chewed mate leaves directly or made infusions in a gourd filled with water. Known for eliminating fatigue and promoting a good mood, yerba mate was also consumed for therapeutic purposes. Today, Taragüi is the leading brand in Argentina, producing more than 56,000 tons of yerba mate per year. Since its creation in 1940, Taragüi yerba mate has been cultivated, harvested and prepared by true experts. It is produced at Establecimiento Las Marías, which covers more than 30,000 hectares in the Argentine province of Corrientes. Las Marías started in 1924, when Víctor Navajas Centeno challenged the cattle-raising traditions of northeastern Argentina and planted the southernmost yerba mate plantations in the world. Since 1924, the family business Las Marías has guaranteed an excellent quality yerba mate and controls all stages of production, from cultivation to sale. Today, from the same corner of the province of Corrientes in Argentina, with almost 100 years of experience in the market and with the same innovative spirit, Las Marías stands for quality in the production of yerba mate.
